Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon

I don't get why they call it "Haystack Rock", I have seen folks who pile up their hay like this, but to me it looks nothing of a haystack? Hay is nice and soft, this is a hard tough rock with lots of seagulls and seagull pooh on top. Just saying??!

Please enjoy the video from that day. So windy, an overcast day, & all the amazing sea creatures we got to see, which was so fun. I did try to get up close with a few seagulls, but they were not having it!! Guess they don't like getting social with people unless you have food?! All I wanted was a good picture??! Is that too much to ask? Beth ( :

Beautiful pictures. This may not be as soft as hay,but I can see that it has the shape of a haystack.

It does look like a Haystack..I think they are only talking about the shape?? Great pictures..
Looks fabulous, Beth. Tremendous photos. And I do think the rock looks like a traditional haystack - though I take your point about the slight difference in texture..! As for gulls, most of them over here aren't at all shy - in fact, they take no prisoners; I'd gladly cull them - vicious creatures!

I guess the shape looks like a haystack. I love watching the waves rolling in and the sea critters are fascinating.

Ahh, love this beach! I suppose back in the day they used to whack and stack hay then when the day was done they would leave the pitchfork stuck in the haystack. It is a great place to visit, we were there last spring and our two year old grandsons couldn't get enough of the sand. Glad you have the time to travel and enjoy yourselves!
