Sycamore Shoals, TN

"Sycamore Shoals State Park, Tennessee", I was curious what a "shoals" are? I went to google to get more info ... here is what google did say "a large number of fish swimming together." ...The other place I know of talking about "shoals" would be "Muscle Shoals" in "Sweet Home Alabama" song by Lynyrd Skynyrd. "Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers, And they've been known to pick a song or two". Muscle Shoals is a Sound Studio. Not sure how it got it's name? Maybe you know?

I still didn't get the meaning or understanding of why there is a state park there? so I wanted to get some research to pass that along to you my friends so you 2 would understand and might wish to visit this amazing state park when in TN. Here is what the website above did say, just a bit though... "In 1772, leaders in the settlement came together to establish “the first free and independent community on the continent,” four years prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Three years later, the largest private real estate transaction on our continent, the Transylvania Purchase, took place at this site, when Judge Richard Henderson negotiated an agreement with the Cherokee leaders. In reaction to this event, Fort Watauga was constructed in 1776 to protect the settlers from Cherokee attack.

On September 25, 1780, Sycamore Shoals became the muster site of the Overmountain Men, who set out to find British Major Patrick Ferguson, who had threatened to “hang your leaders and lay waste to your country with fire and sword.” The Overmountain Men defeated Ferguson in just over an hour in the epic battle of King’s Mountain. Many historians believe that the actions of these men at Sycamore Shoals turned the tide of the American Revolution, and saved America from British rule and control." I sure hope that does give you a bit more info.? If you are wishing for more info please go to their website, Link above in quotes.

Thank you for stopping by today. Hope you are well. Take care. Be Well & Be Blessed. Beth ( ;

"Muscle Shoals"

Maybe it has something to do with shellfish?

"...British Major Patrick Ferguson, who had threatened to “hang your leaders and lay waste to your country with fire and sword.”

Charming.

I'm glad he got beat!

Love this so much! Great bit of historic information! This is such an important site. Love the log building, and I love the significance of it all. Great post!

Muscle Shoals in also a place in AL...hence it's mention in the song. It's on the TN River. BTW you asked about my header photo: it was taken on our trip up the lower 2/3 of the Oregon Coast last month. We went to visit Russell's sister in Brookings, and then worked our way up to Newport then headed East toward home. I have been posting a bunch of the coastline photos this past month.

Have a great week!

Weird to think of that term in an inland location like this.

I love places like this...I thought shoals was a place of shallow waters.
I knew about the battle of Kings Mountain- m husband has ancestors who were part of that battle. And I, too, always thought shoals meant a place where the water went over a gravel bed- real shallow, as in when canoing...you know you have to get out and walk the canoe over the shoals.
Always learning something new from you! Have a great rest of the week.

So beautiful . . i often daydream of living in a place that looks like this . . . I'm sorry to see there was agreement with Cherokee people - which led to people building a fort and getting ready for war . . . I wonder what broke down in communication . . sigh.

I'm sending a load of love your way.
Happy Weekend -
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!
